Moment British-made missile takes out deadly Russian drone in fiery explosion

Moment Ukrainian SAM system obliterates Russian kamikaze drone

Stunning video has emerged of Kyiv’s air defences obliterating a Russian suicide drone over southern Ukraine.

The footage, released by Ukraine’s air force, purportedly shows one of 30 Russian targets downed over Ukraine on the night of October 3 – though two did get through.

In the video, a ground-based SAM launcher fires a missile at a distant target that explodes on impact before another missile streaks in to finish the drone.

According to OSINTtechnical – an open-source intelligence account covering the war in Ukraine – the missile appears to be a modified British-made AIM-132 ASRAAM.

While the AIM-132 was designed to be plane-launched, Ukraine has been known to modify weapons to use them in a surface-to-air (SAM) capacity. It’s unclear from where the second missile was launched.

Ukraine’s Air Force claimed the “138th Dnipro anti-aircraft missile brigade, the 301st Nikopol anti-aircraft missile regiment of the Air Command East, the 160th anti-aircraft missile brigade of the Odesa Air Command South, fighter aircraft of the Air Force and mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces of Ukraine” were all involved in downing Russian aerial targets overnight.

The combat footage comes as both Moscow and Kyiv increasingly launch overnight drone strikes.

Last night, Ukraine’s General Staff claimed it had downed 24 out of 29 Russian drones.

Ukrainian media also claimed Kyiv’s drones damaged a Russian S-400 Triumph air defence system near the Russian city of Belgorod.

The outlets cited Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) which did not elaborate on the damage caused.

On the night of October 4, Russia claimed to have downed 31 Ukrainian drones over three regions: Belgorod, Bryansk and Kursk.

Russian authorities in Bryansk claimed that Ukraine had shelled the region with cluster munitions overnight.
