The creators of a "smutty" calendar that features naked ladies holding giant carp are 'perverts' and there's "nothing sexy about tormenting fish," PETA has fumed.

The Carponizer Carp Calendar 2024, which costs just shy of £25, is a niche market product produced in Germany for avid fishers and has gained popularity year on year. The 2023 edition cost a relatively cheap £16.20.

The newest offering, much like every other year, features scantily clad or naked models posing with giant carp – who were caught just before they were handed to the girls to hold while they posed.

This, of course, has attracted ire from animal rights activists, with PETA's Elisa Allen telling the Daily Star that the calendar is "perverted and tasteless."

She said: "The creators of this smutty carp calendar are perverted and tasteless – there’s nothing sexy about tormenting fish. The moment they are dragged from their homes, fish begin to panic and suffocate."

Elisa added that the ordeal can cause the fish to die from shock.

"So severe is this stress that even if they are tossed back into the water shortly after capture, many still die from shock or injuries sustained during the ordeal," she added.

"Today, most people agree that the days of treating living, feeling beings as photo props should be behind us and are far more likely to choose PETA’s calendar, which promotes respect for animals, than they are this product of cruelty."

Animal Aid Director, Iain Green, agreed. He told the Star that the fish suffer "immense stress" during and after the shoot.

"Animal Aid is saddened to see such a misguided project which is exploiting both the fish and the women involved," he said.

"Fish feel pain and suffer as much as other animals. These unwilling fish will suffer immense stress and suffering just to be objectified for people who engage in what is essentially a cruel and unnecessary pastime."

However, Hendrik Pöhler, who founded the calendar back in 2014, said the fish are immediately released after the shoot and not harmed.

"What goes best with good looking carp?" he asked. "Scantily clad women, of course."

The calendar is shot over several weeks at Lake Fishabil, a carp-fishing hotspot in Brittany, France.

Carponizer has been contacted for comment.
