Good, but not great
The room price and location of the hotel are both excellent. Most websites don't mention that the taxes and other fees required by San Francisco add $15 to $20 per night to the advertised room rate. Also, the $20 for parking is per night. I guess I should have figured that, but I didn't. Parking in San Francisco is tricky and expensive. Locals there told me tourist parking tickets are a major source of revenue for the city. The hotel has no other amenities...if you want a meal or a gym or a bar, go somewhere else. The room price is bare bones, and that's what you get. There was also a maintenance problem in my room. There was a leak in the bathroom ceiling. Maintenance came and looked at it, then said I could move to another room or they'd just do the main repair work after I left. Well, I opted to stay, but maintenance wound up coming back anyway. Bottom line - I wish I had paid $10-$15 a night more to stay in a nicer place.
Better than average
We booked Comfort Inn by the Bay because of the price and location. I was a little worried just because it was a Comfort Inn, but the hotel turned out to be much better than I expected. We were allowed to check in early, which was a plus. The staff was friendly. The room was very clean. The shower had good water pressure. The only downfall was the noise. Even though we were not on the street the noise from the hallway was enough to wake us up several times each night. The ice machine was VERY NOISEY! Bring earplugs and you won't have a problem. The location was great. We could easily walk to Ghiradelli Square, Fisherman's Wharf area, and the curvy part of Lombard Street. The continental breakfast was good enough get us going in the morning. You need to get there early if you want some fruit... it is gone by 8AM. We were happy with our stay at Comfort Inn by the Bay. We would definitely stay there again.
great location with a great price
This hotel is just a short walk from Fisherman's Wharf, the curved part of Lombard and the cable car turn around. The room was very adequate with windows that opened slightly. The noise can be a tad loud from the traffic but it wasn't bothersome. The free continential breakfast was your standard fare. We felt very safe walking around the area at night. The front desk people were very helpful with places to avoid along with directions for things to see. We didn't have a car so parking wasn't an issue. If you are hungry for tasty sub sandwiches try Viking (I believe) subs across the street. We will definately stay at this hotel again.
