Boris Johnson warning: Richard Tice urges PM ‘don’t bottle it’ in EU Brexit face-off

Brexit: Richard Tice says he hopes PM 'doesn't bottle it'

Former Brexit Party Chairman Richard Tice told talkRADIO that Britain wants a “proper Brexit” and this was shown by millions of voters backing Mr Johnson in the 2019 general election.  Both the UK and EU’s negotiating teams have announced it is unlikely a trade agreement will be secured before the deadline at the end of the year.

Mr Tice said: “Let’s hope he does not bottle it, that has been my nervousness.

“That is what we have been urging him to do.

“I think he knows that this Government’s foundation is based on a proper Brexit.

“That is what people in their millions gave him that big majority to do, so far so good.”

He continued: “The European Union is very good at taking sovereignty from its various member states including the United Kingdom.

“We are now seeing that it is incredibly reluctant and very bad at handing it back when a nation says ‘enough is enough’.

“There is no question that we will succeed but we need that flexibility to cut the EU’s daft regulations.”

On Thursday, Boris Johnson admitted a trade deal with the EU was unlikely following a number of sticking points in the negotiations.

During an interview with Sky News, the Prime Minister raged at Brussels for attempting to tie Britain’s hands in a future trade agreement.

The Prime Minister said: “I have just updated Cabinet on where we’ve got to with our friends and partners in the EU.

“They agreed very strongly with me that the deal on the table is really not at the moment right for the UK.

“There’s a couple of things at least, the most important is that really just in the last couple of weeks they’ve brought back the idea of this equivalence between the UK and the EU.

“Which basically means that whatever new laws they brought in, we would have to follow or else face punishment, sanctions tariffs or whatever.

“It was put to me this was a bit like twins, the UK is one twin, the EU is another, and if the EU decides to have a haircut then the UK has got to have a haircut or else face punishment, or if the EU decides to buy an expensive handbag, then the UK has to buy an expensive handbag, or else face tariffs.”

Mr Johnson added: “Clearly that’s not a sensible way to proceed. It’s unlike any other free trade deal.

“It’s a way of keeping the UK kind of locked in the EU’s orbit, in their regulatory orbit.”
