Lord Trimble, the former leader of the Ulster Unionist Party who was in power when the Good Friday Agreement was signed, told Mr Johnson that he must press ahead with plans to rip up the Northern Ireland Protocol. He warned that the Government is “involved in a test of wills with the EU which it cannot flunk”. Meanwhile, Lord Frost, the former Brexit negotiator, warned that the bloc’s “casually destructive handling” of the protocol has plunged the peace agreement “into great peril”. The warnings come as the Government prepares to table legislation that will override the Irish Sea border, stopping checks on goods between Great Britain and the island, replacing them with the UK’s proposed green lane system.
