Bridgen snubbed as MPs block Bill to ban social gender transitioning in schools

Andrew Bridgen introduces bill on gender recognition

A Bill introduced to protect the rights of parents to know if their child is socially transitioning to a different gender was narrowly voted down by MPs today.

The Schools (Gender and Parental Rights) Bill was introduced by Reclaim MP Andrew Bridgen, who was kicked out of the Conservative Party for criticising the Covid vaccine rollout.

Among the measures in the proposed Bill which came under 10-minute rule legislation, was a guarantee that parents would be informed by schools if their children wanted to socially transition.

But a small group of MPs gathered together to block the Bill by 40 votes to 34.

The balance was tipped by 11 former Conservative colleagues of Mr Bridgen who opposed the safety measures for young people he was proposing even though 25 Tories and six DUP MPs backed him.

Mr Bridgen told MPs: “I bring to the House today a Bill, the very necessity of which is both grotesque, and revealing, of an absurdity, that turning a blind eye to the real-world effects of what, seemingly good faith legislation, has had on our education system, schools, and society as a whole.”

He went on: “I am sickened to say that, under all our noses, members of society either politically or educationally tasked with helping bring our children up, have turned raising the next generation into a science experiment, with consequences that will break your heart.

“In schools today, it is rapidly becoming taught as a normal and common occurrence to not feel at home in our own bodies, and that the reason we feel that way is very likely to be because we as a person, are simply trapped in the body of the opposite sex.

“In some schools, one in 15 children now identify as something different from their actual biological sex.

“Mr Speaker, the exceptions that proved the rule are now becoming the rule. We have started to blur the lines of basic reality and turned what was already an extremely complex world for children to get to grips with, into an infinitely more complex one.”

He added: “Gender ideology is a political ideology, one that is being actively promoted in schools and therefore constitutes political indoctrination – which under section 406 of the Education Act is strictly prohibited.”

Mr Bridgen’s Bill would have banned social transitioning in schools and given parents the right to know if their child was socially transitioning.

But former Labour minister Sir Ben Bradshaw branded it “despicable”.

He said: “Trans and non-binary people have always existed.

“Gender dysphoria has been an internationally recognised condition for decades.”

The Exeter MP insisted that he recognised the issue can “pose challenges” to schools, but claimed: “Schools have become very experienced at handling social transitioning with both sensitivity and professionalism.

“The impact of this bill would turn the clock back to an age in which the very existence of trans and non-binary people, a tiny minority, was simply not acknowledged.”
