Sir Lindsay Hoyle seemed to be surprised by the complexion of the Conservative MP stating that he was “looking rather orange” as he prepared to ask his question via video call. Mr Fabricant joked that describing him as orange made him think of current US President Donald Trump.

Sir Lindsay said: “Let us head up to Lichfield, oh my word, we have got the cathedral in the background.

“Let us head up to Michael Fabricant who is looking rather orange today.”

The House of Commons then erupted with laughter.

The Conservative MP replied: “I am very worried that you are saying I am looking orange Mr Speaker.

“It makes me think of Donald Trump.”

The Speaker of the House of Commons has previously outlined the dress code for virtual Parliament.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle joked that Members of Parliament can wear what they want as long as he can’t see it.

Sky News’ Adam Boulton quizzed the Speaker on whether MPs could wear pyjamas or pants as he would only be able to see them from the waist up during video calls.

Sir Lindsay told Sky News that he hoped the dress code would be virtually the same as it is in the House of Commons.

The Commons Speaker said: “We have got to pull together, we have got to be effective.

“The Government wants scrutiny and quite rightly the scrutiny starts today.”

Mr Boulton replied: “Is it in order to wear pyjamas or pants if you look ok from the waist up?”

The Speaker joked: “As long as I can’t see.”

He continued: “I am hoping the dress code is virtually the same as it is in the Chamber.

“What I can say is what I can see is what I will be looking at.

“I don’t want to see anything else I assure you.”
