Sir Keir Starmer furiously grilled the Prime Minister and accused the Conservatives of misleading the public by claiming refurbished hospitals were the same as building new ones. The Labour leader screamed across the despatch box and attacked Boris Johnson for throwing Christmas parties in lockdown and breaking manifesto promises. The jibes appeared to have cut through to the Prime Minister who responded with an equally fiery attack on Labour and said if they were in power then the UK would still be in lockdown.
Speaking during Prime Minister’s Questions, the opposition leader showed documents which detailed how proposed 40 new hospitals would not be built from scratch.
Instead, existing hospitals would see refurbishment work done with Sir Keir slamming the Government for misleading the public.
Mr Johnson responded and said it would be wrong to build hospitals on green belt land and claimed the environment would be at risk.
Sir Keir then joked that Mr Johnson likely thought he was getting a new flat when Downing Street was refurbished – the funding of which is currently under investigation.
Sir Keir listed off the “broken promises” from the Tories and said: “This prime minister is week in week out defending the indefensible and broken promises.
“His mates were found to be corrupt. He tried to get them off the hook.
“Downing Street throws parties during a lockdown. He says it is not a problem. He promised no tax rises and then he put up tax.
“He promised a rail revolution in the north that he cancelled the trains. He promised no one would have to sell their home for care.

“He promised 40 new hospitals and even if you count paint jobs, his own watchdog says he can’t deliver it.
“Isn’t this the truth Mr Speaker, that any promises from this Prime Minister aren’t worth a manifesto paper written on?”
Mr Johnson replied: “The right honourable gentleman dribbles on irrelevantly about wallpaper and parties…
“I’m told that when the Deputy Leader was told she was not invited she denounced him as ‘idiotic, childish and pathetic’.”

Mr Johnson claimed Angela Rayner was not invited to the Labour Christmas party following reports of infighting among Labour MPs following a sudden reshuffle.
The Conservative leader continued: “They’re getting on with factional infighting, we are delivering for the people of this country…
“They have no plan whatever and don’t forget their resort to absolutely every problem is either to take this country back into lockdown or to open up uncontrolled immigration.
“That is their approach… and if we listened to Captain Hindsight we would still be in lockdown.”
