Labour is calling for a mask mandate to tackle the surge in Covid cases across the UK. However, talkRADIO host Julia Hartley-Brewer took frontbencher Jonathan Reynolds to task over the demand. She pointed out that Labour MPs were not wearing masks while partying at the party conference this year.

Ms Hartley-Brewer said: “You say that the Labour Party would support mandatory face masks in crowded public areas.

“Why was that not enforced at the Labour Party conference?

“I was fascinated to see Labour MPs, frontbenchers included, all donned their masks for PMQs, barely a face to be seen on the Labour benches.

“But two weeks ago, I was at Labour Party conference and I barely saw a mask there.”

She continued: “People were doing karaoke and there was no social distancing whatsoever, no good ventilation.

“Why does Labour think everyone else should wear a mask but you don’t?”

The Shadow Work and Pensions minister said that he did have a mask on at the conference but added: “I would not say all the time.

“But to get into the conference you had to show a negative test or vaccination status.”

Ms Hartley-Brewer hit back, claiming that no one checked her for a test result after Sunday.

She said: “A negative lateral flow test from Saturday is not any use on a Wednesday.

“We saw Angela Rayner doing karaoke in a crowded nightclub on Tuesday. Those were not Covid safe measures.”

Mr Reynolds suggested that this “whataboutery” was not helpful, prompting Ms Hartley-Brewer to laugh.

She said: “It’s not whataboutery. It’s about one rule for us little people, and one rule for you.”

This comes as Labour called for an urgent rethink from the Government on its Covid response.

Mr Reynolds said: “We are supposed to be delivering half a million booster jabs a day. It’s not even half of that.

“The vaccination isn’t even a fifth of where it’s meant to be at this point.”
