The First Minister will speak in a pre-recorded message, airing at 7pm. It is thought she will double down on the restrictions announced for Scotland in Holyrood on Tuesday afternoon.

People in Scotland were told that they should limit social contact to a maximum of three households at one time, following concerns over the rapidly-spreading Omicron variant.

The First Minister said that this would not apply on December 25, nor should Scots cancel their pre-made plans.

Ms Sturgeon said: “Before and immediately after Christmas, please minimise your social mixing with other households as much as you can.

“However, if you do plan on socialising – either at home or in indoor public places – we are asking that you limit the number of households represented in your group to a maximum of three.

“And make sure you test before you go.”

Although this limit of three households is not legally enforceable by the Scottish government, Ms Sturgeon added: “Please do not think of it as optional.”
