Bank hols and Coronation parties to fuel booziest May ever as 650m pints necked

Beer we go! Brits will down 650million pints as three Bank Holidays and Coronation parties trigger the booziest May ever.

Revellers were photographed getting the party started on Friday night, with a Super Sunday for bars tomorrow as the nation is off work on Monday.

Coronation knees-ups follow next weekend and the late May Bank Holiday weekend from May 27-29 caps a mega month for beer.

Boozers are stocking up, with 300m pub pints – up 50m – set to be supped this month.

Another 350m pints will go down the hatch at home, up 75m, as shown in data trends from the British Beer and Pub Association, which also monitors supermarket and off-licence sales.

13m more pub pints than normal will be supped this weekend alone.

Pubs are banking on the flurry of holidays to throw them a lifeline as punters flock in after bars’ energy bills support payments were slashed.

A spokesperson for the British Institute of Innkeeping said: “Pubs will welcome customers in their droves this May.

“Three extended Bank Holiday weekends are a boost to trade over after a tough 12 months of huge energy price hikes.

“Hundreds of pubs are preparing Coronation parties, special events and festivals, giving the experience they can only get in the Great British pub.

“The coming month is a huge opportunity for pubs to get people into their venues to celebrate with friends and families.”

Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, said: “We’re expecting a rise in footfall and food and drink sales, both in pubs and the off trade.

“With Bank Holidays and national celebrations for the Coronation, pubs will welcome customers on extra days off.”
