A British woman has died after being buried under a heap of snow on Mont Blanc, France, yesterday (January 14).

Emergency services have confirmed the 45-year-old's death after she had been walking up the French Alps this weekend.

Tragedy struck on Saturday afternoon when an avalanche came crashing down the mountain range burying the victim under the snow.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services "the person unfortunately died" police said, with an investigation now taking place and an autopsy requested by the judicial authorities.

The woman's partner and guide were thankfully unharmed.

There have also been reports emerging of a second avalanche in a nearby ski area, with a search underway to find any victims.

It came down in the Brevent ski area also in Chamonix, where it apparently hit a ski run.

Speaking of the incident one eyewitness said: “There was a woman caught up to her hips in the slide.

"A search was started by skiers and snowboarders. Then the experts took over."

Today, the avalanche risk in the area stood at three out of five indicating that the risk was "considerable" with a prediction of 70cm of snow over 2000m on Sunday and Monday.

Skiers have been urged to take caution by the Avalanche Academy, a training school in the area that warned: "There’s a huge amount of snow coming to Chamonix this week, which means the avalanche hazard is going to increase dramatically.”
