Britains reservoirs drying up as record-breaking 40C heatwave continues

The record-breaking heatwave has seen the country's reservoirs vanish at an extraordinary rate while wildfires rage across the UK and temperatures continue to soar.

Prior to the start of this week's ridiculous weather which has smashed the all-time UK temperature record, the country's reservoirs were already on the verge of running dry due to a lack of rainfall.

And as the country reels from the 40C heat, there has been genuine talk of a hose pipe ban to give Britain's battered fields a break with river levels a third lower than they should be.

One of the worst affected reservoirs in the UK is Bolton's Wayoh Reservoir which has been plagued by arid spots in recent weeks, reports the Mail.

The glistening pool is responsible for supplying 50% of Bolton with water and should be filled with 500 million gallons of liquid.

However, parts of the pool are now almost dry and pictures show exposed banks and arid spots all around the reservoir.

Neighbouring Thruscross reservoir in Yorkshire has also been devastated by the heat with water levels slowly receding.

The great evaporation comes as Britain reels from the devastating effects of the hottest day on record.

Temperatures soared above 40C in parts of the UK today (July 19) causing wildfires.

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said that a major incident had been declared in the capital in response to the barrage of fires that caused fire crews to work at 10 locations at once.

He said: "London Fire Brigade has just declared a Major Incident in response to a huge surge in fires across the capital today. This is critical:

"London Fire Brigade is under immense pressure. Please be safe. I'm in touch with the Commissioner and will share updates when I have them."
