A young woman has been killed after a gunman opened fire at a "packed" pub on Christmas Eve.

Police attended the Lighthouse Inn in Wallasey Village, Merseyside, after receiving reports of gunshots just after 11:50 pm last night (December 24) and have since launched a murder probe.

The woman was taken to hospital with bullet wounds following the incident but was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.

Her next of kin have been informed of her death and are receiving support from specially trained officers, Merseyside Police said.

Several others were also injured and are being treated for their wounds in hospital, the Mirror reported.

The alleged gunman is said to have driven away from the pub's car park in a dark vehicle, which officers think may have been a Mercedes.

Detective Superintendent Dave McCaughrean of Merseyside Police said: “This investigation is in the very early stages and we understand that this is a truly shocking and devastating incident that has happened just before Christmas Day in a busy venue full of young people.

“We have a number of officers at Wallasey Village who are carrying out extensive enquiries to understand exactly what has taken place and take immediate action.
