Diana ‘deliberately’ decided Panorama interview should air on Charles’ birthday

Princess Diana was being "mischievous" by deciding that her eye-opening BBC Panorama interview should air on Prince Charles' birthday, according to a friend.

In a new ITV documentary, The Diana Interview: Revenge Of A Princess, her journalist friend Richard Kay said she would have remembered the importance of the date.

The explosive interview, which aired 25 years ago on November 14, 1995, saw the "people's princess" boldly admit to her fling with James Hewitt.

In the televised interview with the BBC's Martin Bashir, she also opened her heart out her estranged husband's affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles and infamously said there were "three people" in the marriage.

The interview was widely seen as an embarrassment to the Royal Family.

Given she had control over when to tell the Palace, Princess Diana would need to be consulted about when the BBC would tell the world, and editor Ian Corcoran says: "Martin suggested that we asked Princess Diana.

"He slipped out of the room to phone her and a while later he came back in, he said she had suggested a date which just happened to be Prince Charles’s birthday."

When Richard Ayre, the BBC's former head of editorial policy, is asked what date it was, he says it was Tuesday, November 14, but didn't know it was Prince Charles's birthday, saying: "Oh, really?

"Frankly, I doubt if any of us involved actually had that date in our diaries."

Weighing-in on the significance of the date, Richard Kay says: "It may be that Bashir and co said, 'Well, we want to announce it on the 14th of November.'

"And she would have said, 'Oh, that’s my husband's birthday, Yes. Why not?'"

"I'd have thought that was typically mischievous Diana."

This comes after it was revealed that Prince Charles is alleged to have frankly told Diana he didn't love her the night before the wedding to be "square with her", according to her astrologer.

And a royal photographer interviewed for the documentary branded Prince Charles "atrocious" for leaving Diana to play Polo hours after she gave birth to Prince Harry.

The Diana Interview: Revenge Of A Princess is on ITV at 9pm tonight
