Diana had ally in sympathetic Queen during turbulent marriage, author claims

The Queen was undoubtedly ‘sympathetic’ towards her daughter-in-law Princess Diana, an author claims.

According to Matthew Dennison, Diana had an ally in the Queen throughout her rocky marriage with Prince Charles.

The couple's relationship following their fairytale royal wedding in 1981, came to a crashing end little over a decade later.

Dennison's new book challenges reports at the time of Charles and Di's marriage, which blamed William and Harry's mum for their parents' problems, the Mirror reports.

Diana appeared to ruffle feathers at the Palace which sparked questions about why she would "jeopardise the institution that she’d married into".

But the Princess had support in the most powerful of places, Dennison told Fox News.

He said: “There’s no doubt that the Queen was sympathetic to the Princess of Wales.

“It is clear that the Queen had a great personal fondness for her.

“But you know, people didn’t discuss mental health to the extent that we do today. And people’s knowledge of it was less.

“And of course, the Queen, being a generation older than the Princess of Wales, had a very old-fashioned upbringing. It was a late-19th-century upbringing where you certainly didn’t talk about those things."

He went on: “I don’t think there was ever any lack of affection.

“I think the Queen didn’t understand why the Princess might say or do things that would jeopardise the institution that she’d married into, which was also her own children’s inheritance."

Diana had spoken of feelings of failure and “rampant bulimia”, which she claimed the discovery of Charles’ affair had contributed towards.

Diana’s infamous interview with Martin Bashir caused ructions within the royal family, when she said “there were three of us in this marriage”.

It comes as the Princess of Wales is the subject of an upcoming biopic called Spencer, which will shed more light on her life.

Featuring Kristen Stewart as the People’s Princess, it will focus on the collapse of her marriage to Charles, played by Jack Farthing.

It is due for release in UK cinemas on November 5.

But it has been slammed by some royal experts, with one claiming it will cause 'hurt' within the family.
