Dog owner forced to punch out-of-control Alsatian as it mauled his pet to death

A dog owner has been left devastated after his beloved pooch was mauled to death by an Alsatian.

Luna, a five-year-old Chihuahua/Bichon Frise cross, was on a walk with owner Ian Fields in Grimsby last Thursday morning when three German shepherds approached them, and one of them grabbed Luna in its mouth.

Ian, 50, managed to prise her away from the Alsatian and got her to his mum’s house before taking Luna to the Blue Cross.

But vets there gave him the devastating news that she’d have to be put down, reports Grimsby Live.

“We were out walking Luna and our other dog, Stella, along Frederick Ward Way near the river,” Ian said.

“I was just putting something in the bin when I heard the pitter-patter of footsteps and turned to see these three German shepherds.

"The girl walking them could have only been about 18, bless her, and there was no way she could’ve controlled all of them.

“When I realised one of them had Luna in its mouth, I started punching it to get it to drop her.

“It all happened so quickly, too, and as soon as I got her out I wrapped her in a towel and took her to my mum's, which was only five minutes away.

“Having seen what had happened, though, I knew it was bad.”

Ian is struggling to come to terms with the loss of his beloved Luna, and he’s not the only one.

His cat and Stella “keep looking at the door waiting for her to come home to play with them”, he said.

“I was absolutely devastated when [the vets] told me. I really didn't expect it.”

“They told us she had a perforated lung and a broken rib cage and that she was put on a life support machine. It's just crazy to think that in the space of five hours she was no longer with us.

“It’s made me so much more wary of walking Stella now, too.

“I’m constantly keeping an eye out and so is she.”
