Sgt. Pepper, a Yorkshire terrier mix, was just six years old when he went missing from his home in Florida in 2014. Unable to find the canine, his owner filed a police report to say he had been stolen and notified the microchip company where the dog was registered.
Fast forward to February 2020, Sgt. Pepper’s owner updated the contact information on his microchip, which resulted in the pooch being located within minutes.
The pup was found in Charlotte, Michigan at the Eaton County Animal Control. They were able to track down his original owner thanks to the original microchip details registered.
In another miraculous turn of events Sgt. Pepper’s owner also discovered a post showing pooch for sale on American advertisement website Cragslist.
A statement from the Eaton County Animal Control said that this incredible scenario highlights the importance of having pets microchipped.
It reads: “This story also serves as a reminder why it is SO IMPORTANT to have all found dogs scanned for a microchip.
“It is also a great idea to have any new dog you acquire scanned for a microchip just in case, especially if any portion of the pet’s history is unknown.”
Despite not knowing how or why Sgt. Pepper ended up more than 1,000 away from his original home, the shelter said that they were able to find where he was living.
The Yorkie mix was adopted by a family for five years who were unaware of his microchip and stolen status.
Sgt. Pepper’s owner was finally reunited with her pet dog after flying out to Michigan on June 30.
The shelter said: “We are grateful for their understanding that Sgt Pepper had to be reunited with his original family, and we ask that people please be sensitive toward their situation.”
“This incredible story is a testament to the value of microchipping your pet and keeping your contact info current.”
