The US president used the term in a flurry of tweets as he defended his action against the spread of coronavirus in the US, and told Americans the epidemic “is not your fault”. The virus was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year. On Wednesday Mr Trump said: “For the people that are now out of work because of the important and necessary containment policies, for instance the shutting down of hotels, bars and restaurants, money will soon be coming to you.
“The onslaught of the Chinese Virus is not your fault! Will be stronger than ever!”
He added: “I always treated the Chinese Virus very seriously, and have done a very good job from the beginning, including my very early decision to close the ‘borders’ from China – against the wishes of almost all. Many lives were saved.
“The Fake News new narrative is disgraceful & false!”
He sent another tweet to give his followers a heads up about an upcoming news conference he would hold to provide news from the federal Food and Drug Administration “concerning the Chinese Virus”.
Mr Trump’s messages came a day after he was rebuked by China for insisting the sickness was “Chinese”.
A spokesman for the foreign ministry warned the US should “take care of its own business” before stigmatising China.
It seems like the table has turned since last week when a spokesman for the foreign ministry in Beijing claimed the US Army was to blame for coronavirus.
The spokesman alleged troops had brought the killer virus to the Hubei province.
He did not provide any evidence for the accusation.
But his words were quickly met with condemnation from the US.
President Trump’s Secretary of State Mike Pompeo came out demanding China stop spreading “disinformation” as countries around the world imposed strict measures to contain the viral disease.

Mr Pompeo slammed the Chinese government for trying “to shift blame” for the outbreak.
US voters weighed in on their President’s use of the term “Chinese virus”.
Comedian Nick Jack Pappas said the Republican leader’s words would “tear us apart”.
He said: “Dear Americans, please condemn in the harshest terms the occupant of the White House calling this a ‘Chinese virus.’
“At a time when we should be coming together, Trump is still trying to tear us apart.”
But others claimed it was the Chinese authorities who were spreading misinformation.
Carmine Sabia responded: “Dear China, kindly stop making viruses in labs and then being so ignorant that you allow them to get to the public where they infect the world.
“This is not the first time.
“And then you lied about it and cost lives.
“Truth is truth #ChinaLiedPeopleDied.”
