Family scoop £820,000 from lottery ticket bought as Christmas stocking filler

A lucky trainee nurse won $1million from a lottery ticket that was bought as a Christmas stocking filler.

The money, equivalent to £820,000 in the UK, will now be shared out between the members of her family from the American state of Virginia.

Jennifer Wanamaker, of Chesterfield County, bought the New Year's Millionaire Raffle ticket from the Wegman's store in Midlothian as a festive present for her daughter Caitlin, who could not believe her luck when it proved to be a winner.

She told Virginia Lottery officials: "It's surreal. It's a great start to the new year!"

Caitlin also announced that she will be splitting the huge sum between herself, her parents Jennifer and Patrick and her twin sister Alison, with both siblings currently studying nursing at college.

A delighted Patrick added: "If one person wins, we all win."

Caitlin's gesture comes in complete contrast to a tight-lipped dad who decided to keep his £26million lottery jackpot win two-and-a-half months ago a secret from his wife and child in case it made them lazy.

The man, who kept his identity hidden by wearing a bizarre character costume, collected the eye-watering sum at a lottery office in the Chinese city of Nanning.

The father, only known by the name Mr Li, said despite being ecstatic over the news he had to think about how it would impact his family's lifestyle.

He collected his winnings in October, with the windfall totalling 171.6million yuan after tax (£20.4million).

Mr Li said he has donated 5million yuan (£600,000) to charity, according to the Nanning Evening News.

"I didn't tell my wife and child for fear that they would be too complacent and would not work, or work hard in the future," he said.

The dad reportedly purchased 40 lottery tickets from a shop located in town east of Nanning, called Litang.
