Brits weren’t prepared to let a Tuesday night get in the way of their Halloween celebrations, as ghosts and ghouls flocked to the nation’s bars for an old-fashioned knees up.
Young people dressed as everything from Ali G to Medusa hit the town for a wild night of haunted hedonism last night (October 31). Outfits varied from raunchy to hilarious and the downright bizarre.
What remained fairly universal was the consumption of booze, as people from Portsmouth to Leeds and beyond seemingly got on the sauce. As is often the case this time of year, the plummeting temperatures didn’t stop people up and down the country from letting their hair down in skimpy getups – many likely to have been relying on a beer jacket rather than an actual one to keep the chill at bay.

To make things even worse – and even more British – much of the nation got a thorough soaking. Portsmouth was one such spot with people stuck outside queuing to enter the city’s bars and clubs getting drenched.
Further north, revellers fared a little better with the weather holding and costumes staying dry. In some places, the events took an unsavoury turn, withBristolLivereporting the city’s night of “Mayhem”. Police in the city posted on X, formerly Twitter, to offer a round-up of some of the things Avon and Somerset Police had to deal with on the night.
A spokesperson for the force posted: "Ever wondered what goes on behind the 'screams' in our busy control room? This #Halloween we’re 'creeping' it real! We’ll be tweeting live tomorrow night from 5pm until 12am."
Those updates did not disappoint, with one update saying: "Female climbing metal fences and has got stuck, 2nd time she has done it today." Another said: "9 males chasing two girls around a church, reportedly holding a rusty metal sword."
One particularly grim one said: "30 teenagers in balaclavas and skull masks, kicking house doors, car doors and bins over. Police en route."
Others included: "Youths throwing stones at cars and throwing pumpkins at people… 3 kids in balaclavas spray painting an Aldi store… Two youths setting off fireworks outside a McDonalds… Prank call from three adolescent females, reporting themselves missing… 10-year-old missing child was not allowed to go trick or treating but left anyway… 12-year-old child being beaten up by adults outside Poundland. Mention of a stabbing, officers en route… 20 x teenagers wearing balaclavas scaring children."
