Kate Middleton reportedly used to be known as "fit Kate" by friends of a former boyfriend during a gap year holiday on a yacht.

The Duchess started work on the BT Global Challenge yacht in Southampton when she experienced a sweet summer romance during her gap year, after a three-month trip to Florence.

It was reported that she had started to date a fellow deckhand called Ian Henry during her time on the ship and left other men envious, reports the Mail on Sunday.

A crewmate said: "Everyone called her Fit Kate and the lads were very jealous when she got together with Ian.

"It was a summer romance, nothing serious, and it ended when they went their separate ways to start university."

During her popular stint on the ship, Prince William was wrapped up in his own love story as he took a gap year.

His first serious relationship was with Rose Farquhar, the daughter of Captain Ian Farquhar, master of the Beaufort Hunt.

They enjoyed picnics in the Gloucestershire countryside and were allegedly spotted by a farmer who stumbled across them kissing on a field.

It is believed that Kate didn't find love on her trip to Florence because she was possibly still "hung up" on her first boyfriend Harry Blakelock.

A friend told the Mail on Sunday: "Loads of boys found her attractive but when they approached her she would always get very embarrassed and bashful."
