Tram passengers were forced to watch on in horror as a gang of violent youths rained down blows on their victim in broad daylight.
Both the gang of hooded yobs and the victim were brandishing knives during the attack in Droylsden, Manchester, on Thursday (June 8).
Police said two were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries following the attack, but no arrests have been made.

Footage of the vile incident, which was captured by the horror-struck tram passengers, has since been circulated on social media.
In the clip, people can be heard shouting "f****** hell" and "better not chop him with the blade".
Members of the gang appear to slash and stab the man in the street. The man can then be seen cowering as the assailants repeatedly strike him.
After some of the attackers flee the victim also gets to his feet before the footage ends.
Emergency services, including two ambulances and police, were later filmed in a second clip as they descended upon the scene.
Section 60 – which gives cops greater power to stop and search – was put in place in the area on Saturday.
The footage prompted comments online including "state of this county" and "it's becoming normalised when it really isn't normal".
Detective Inspector Steven Horton of GMP said the force is trying to establish the full circumstances. He believes it was a "targeted attack".
He added: "We are appealing to the public for their help, if anyone has any information that could assist us with our enquiries, please do come forward."
