An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 has struck south east of Loyalty Islands in the Pacific Ocean.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said its epicentre was about 250miles (401km) east of Tadine, New Caledonia on Wednesday.

It was at a depth of about 1.25miles (2km), the centre said.

New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency said it was assessing if it “poses any tsunami threat to New Zealand”.

The agency added: "If a tsunami has been generated it is not likely to arrive in New Zealand for at least 3 hours."
