Major blow for Putin after Ukrainian drones blow up Crimea ammo dump

Russian-occupied Crimea has been rocked by two huge explosions in an ammunition depot.

The attack is understood to be caused by Ukrainian drones.

The illegally annexed region has been the repeated target of attacks in a series of humiliations for Vladimir Putin.

Sergei Aksyonov, the Moscow-installed leader of the region, reported the drone attack had succeeded in hitting an ammunition depot and there were no known casualties.

People in the area have been evacuated following the assault.

Mr Aksyonov said on Telegram: “As a result of an enemy drone on the Krasnogvardeisky district, there was a detonation at an ammunition depot.”

“A decision was taken to evacuate people [living] within five kilometres” of the zone, he added.

He did not specify which location was hit. He said the attack was in the Krasnogvardeisky district, which lies inland at the centre of the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea.

The governor added train traffic will be stopped on the peninsula “to minimise risks”.
