A man shockingly set himself ablaze by accident when his plan to burn down a clinic quite literally backfired.

Street surveillance footage outside a surgeon's clinic in Villavicencio in Colombia captured the moment the arsonist slipped and fell onto a pool of petrol.

The man in white cap and long scarf walked into the camera carrying a bucket-like container of flammable liquid and poured it into the rubbish chute that connected to the building.

As he emptied the container, some of the petrol dropped onto the wall and it leaked onto the pavement.

The man slipped and fell on the floor without realising he had the liquid on his jacket.

When he took out a lighter and ignited a spark, a fireball burst and covered the camera for a brief second before it showed the man fleeing with flames on his back.

Smokes billowed out from the rubbish chute and it alerted the locals to call for fire engines.

The Villavicencio Fire Department rushed to the scene in the neighbourhood of La Coralina at around 3.45am and put out the fire immediately.

A spokesperson for the fire department said: "It it evident that there was fire in the electrical room area and the garbage chute, which was controlled with fire extinguishers by the community."

An initial investigation stated the arsonist set the building on fire in response to the deaths of patients who died after getting surgery at the facility.

However the extent of the man's injuries remains unknown.

The owner of the building filed a complaint with the prosecutor's office and called on the authorities to find the suspect.

Viewers shared their thoughts and called the arsonist for acting "stupid".

One joked: "He won't do that again."

"Not the brightest 'spark' I'd say," another added and a third wrote: "You can't buy stupid, it's a good given talent."
