Man stabs girlfriend to death then asks mum to help him cover up murder

A man "blacked out" before allegedly stabbing his girlfriend 31 times in the neck and 23 times elsewhere, a court has heard.

Mum-of-two Kerry Woolley, 38, was killed in the bedroom of her Solihull, West Midlands flat in July last year.

Ian Bennett, 38, denies murdering his partner which according to prosecutors, allegedly followed an internet search of the “best way to get revenge on a woman”.

Birmingham Crown Court heard the defendant was a “jealous and possessive” boyfriend.

Caroline Goodwin QC, prosecuting said the couple had returned to Kerry's home on July 12 after a night of drinking and Bennett taking cocaine.

Claiming Bennett was armed with two knives, Ms Goodwin told the jury: "This was not just a case of someone having been killed by a knife.

"There were 31 stab injuries in the area of her neck."

"It was both brutal and deliberate. She sustained 54 sharp force injuries, the majority in her neck area.

"They were catastrophic.”

Jurors were also told that dashcam footage was recovered from his mum's car and showed Bennett throwing a plastic bag in a canal.

The Crown argues inside the bag was a large knife used to stab Kerry, a claim which, the Crown say is has been supported by DNA.

The suspected killer's mum, Linda Bennett, 63, has been charged with perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender after allegedly making a false witness statement, The Sun reports.

Bennett called 999 for an ambulance at 3:19am on July 12 in what was described to the court as a “pre-planned web of deceit”, with prosecutors claiming "not a word of truth passed his lips".

Bennett has been charged with a single count of murder.

The prosecution claimed Bennett has been lying about what happened that night ever since and tried his best to get rid of any evidence tying him to Kerry's death.

Ms Goodwin said: “He sought to duck and dive and mislead the police.

“The Crown say he is still lying now.

“The destruction of that evidence was done with the willing assistance of his mother, Lynda Bennett."

According to BirminghamLive, She added: "Bennett now says he was present in the flat and he had no memory of Miss Woolley being attacked.

"If he did kill her it was because he lost control. It was she who was emotionally manipulative and controlling over him.

"She demanded sex from him and he declined. She threw objects at him. She produced a knife and came towards him and thereafter he blacked out."

Following her death, friends had paid tribute to the mum-of-two who they said had a "beautiful soul".

Kerry's family had also released a short statement saying: "As a family this has devastated us. We would like to thank everyone for their support."

The trial continues.
