Meghan Markle is set to join Prince Harry next Monday (July 18) as the Duke of Sussex addresses the United Nations for a "commemoration".

In what will be the Sussexes' first public appearance since the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations last month, Harry will visit New York City to mark Nelson Mandela Day.

Harry will speak in front of an informal gathering of the UN General Assembly, with reports suggesting he may touch on climate change and world hunger.

A UN spokesman told the Daily Mail: "The South African Mission has confirmed the participation of the Duke and the Duchess at Monday's commemoration."

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are," is the tagline for this year's Nelson Mandela Day.

Meghan and Harry visited Mandela's widow Graça Machel in 2019, and are said to be keen to honour her.

At the time, Machel told the Sussexes: "It's wonderful meeting you. I'm sure we're going to be working together in the future. I can feel the vibe."

The Sussexes also took to Instagram to share a Mandela quote that same year. It read: "It is so easy to break and destroy. The heroes are those who make peace and build."

Famously, Princess Diana actually met the man himself in Cape Town in March 1997, five months before she tragically died.

Mandela was full of praise for Harry's mother and her efforts to help those with aids. He said: "We saw her sitting on the beds of AIDS patients and shaking hands with them, and that changed perceptions dramatically with regards to AIDS."

He also said that he trembled when he found out he would be meeting her, adding: "I didn't know that I would meet a British princess."
