The first signs of summer are likely to be seen in the coming days as temperatures climb this weekend.

The mercury is likely to climb above 20C in some areas, according to the Met Office, with clear skies also forecast over the coming days.

Met Office weather maps show that temperatures will rise steadily on Saturday (May 12), with 20C predicted in Glasgow.

Highs of 19C are expected elsewhere in places such as London, Belfast and Manchester.

The forecasters have predicted "plenty of sunshine" for most parts of the country, with conditions "feeling warm".

Unfortunately for many Britons, the pleasant shift won't last too long.

By Sunday (May 13), Met Office rain radars show a band of rain moving across the country from the north-west.

The agency has warned of a "murky start", with maps showing approximately 0.5mm of rain per hour from 1am.

Rainfall will gradually intensify in some areas, especially those between London and Manchester.

Intense showers could see between 4mm to 8mm poured over hundreds of miles into the evening.

However, maps from Netweather suggest hot weather should continue through the showers across much of the country.

The Met Office predicts that other areas will see "sunny spells" before the worst weather clears by the morning of Monday, May 15.

Further showers are forecast for Monday, when the Met Office predicts that temperatures will drop back to below average for this time of year.

However, temperatures towards the end of May are expected to be above average with mainly dry conditions.
