Motorist to pay £47k in fines with 48 points on licence after 2 months driving

A motorist has been fined an eye-watering £47,000 and racked up 48 points on their licence during just two months of driving.

John Kelly, 29, was caught speeding 57 times during that time period. He was found to have driven at more than twice the speed limit in 30mph zones.

Kelly, from Llanrumney in Wales, was found to have committed 58 separate offences in a blue Volkswagen Beetle between February 19 and April 14 this year.

The offences were across four different speed camera locations and all but one – a red light offence – were speeding-related, reports WalesOnline.

The highest speed he was clocked as doing in a 30mph zone was 69mph – more than twice the limit.

He sped through 30mph zones at an average speed of 45mph.

After he was caught on camera, an investigation was started by GoSafe – the Welsh Road casualty reduction partnership. The vehicle's details were also circulated nationally.

On April 14, the partnership's Field Enquiry Officers were alerted to the vehicle being stopped in the Staffordshire area, where it was seized for having no insurance.

Officers from Staffordshire Police then provided information to GoSafe, which allowed them to identify Kelly as the keeper of the vehicle, with 58 Notice of Intended Prosecution letters then sent to his home in Llanrumney.

However, when they received no response, all 58 offences were referred to court.

The case was heard at Cardiff Magistrates Court on September 30, where, in Kelly's absence, the 58 offences were proven, and he was ordered to pay a total of £46,880.

He was also disqualified from driving for 36 months and received 48 points on his licence.
