Multiple people dead in Plymouth shooting with critical incident declared

Multiple people have died and others have been injured in a shooting in Plymouth, police have confirmed.

Devon and Cornwall Police made the horrifying announcement after a bloodbath unfolded in Keyham, Plymouth, on Thursday evening.

It has been declared a "critical incident" by the force with the death toll possible as high as five, according to Sky News.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "Police were called to a serious firearms incident in Biddick Drive, in the Keyham area of Plymouth at around 6.10pm today [Thursday 12 August].

"Officers and ambulance staff attended. There have been a number of fatalities at the scene and several other casualties are receiving treatment.

"A critical incident has been declared. The area has been cordoned off and police believe the situation is contained.

"Road closures are in place so please avoid the area.

"We are appealing to the public not to speculate or share pictures of the scene on social media or anywhere else."

The suspected shooter is believed to have been killed, it has been reported.

The incident is “not terror related” and the suspect involved is not “on the run”, according to Plymouth MP Johnny Mercer.

Locals reported hearing "gunshots" and "loud bangs" on Thursday evening, Plymouth Live reports.

Luke Pollard, who is MP for Plymouth Sutton and Davenport, said: "This looks like a very grim day for our city and our community."

Local football club Plymouth Argyle tweeted their condolences, writing: "Our hearts go out to victims of tonight's tragic incident in our city, alongside their families, friends, and the wider Plymouth community."

The South Western Ambulance Service said it was called at just after 6pm on Thursday to an "ongoing incident" in Keyham.

It tweeted: "We responded to the incident with a significant number of resources, including Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART), multiple ambulances, air ambulances, multiple doctors and senior paramedics.

"We will provide an update here in due course."

Video has also been circulating on social media showing what appears to be a body on the floor with police shouting at residents to stay away.

Armed police were filmed standing next to the body covered with a sheet and laid on its back. Blood could be seen on the pavement near the head in the busy residential area.

Home Secretary Priti Patel wrote: "The incident in Plymouth is shocking and my thoughts are with those affected.
