Mum killed husband after row by dousing him with petrol and setting him on fire

A mother-of-five from Victoria, Australia has been jailed for 12 years after she killed her husband by pouring a "significant amount" of petrol on him and setting him on fire.

Angela Surtees, 35, was sentenced at the Supreme Court after pleading guilty to the charge of manslaughter.

On January 25, 2020, Ms Surtees and her husband Daniel had returned to their home in Geelong after having an argument at an engagement party, the court heard.

Daniel was sitting on his favourite armchair on the porch when Surtees poured a jerrycan full of petrol over him, before pulling out a cigarette lighter.

Justice Andrew Tinney told the court: "You threatened Daniel with the lit lighter in close proximity to him… he then burst into flames, becoming largely engulfed."

Three of the couple's young children were home at the time, watching television in the next room.

The court heard that the couple were in an "abusive relationship", and that Daniel had been "egging on" Ms Surtees during a lengthy argument.

He then brought the can of petrol to the sunroom and said she "didn't have it in her" to set him alight.

But Ms Surtees doused her husband in the liquid before standing a metre away and flicking the lighter, setting off what she described as a massive fireball.

Mr Surtees' son attempted to put the fire out using a jug of water, but the 36-year-old tragically died from the severe burns on 80 percent of his body the next day.

Ms Surtees' murder charge was downgraded to manslaughter when she previously made a deal with prosecutors, on the basis that she had only intended to scare her husband – rather than end his life.

Justice Tinney described Ms Surtees' actions as "outrageous", "horrific" and "disturbing", saying they were "a serious act of family violence".
