Former porn star Mia Khalifa has become the target of an odd social media trend – thanks to a local newspaper in Pakistan.

Thanks to one of the Urdu newspapers in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, fans of the 29-year-old Lebanon-born Pornbub favourite are joining one of the country's biggest political parties.

For some reason, the newspaper took a photo of Mia posing with a friend, and used Photoshop to put a headband onto both of them claiming that they are supporting the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf political party.

This is the party run by former cricket legend Imran Khan.

A clipping from the newspaper quickly did the rounds on social media and on local news sites, where it was roundly ridiculed.

It's not clear why the image was used, as the caption and subsequent story has nothing to do with Mia.

But it has now sparked a new social media trend of people in Pakistan pretending to claim that they are now joining the PTI party because Mia has.

And some have even done their own Photoshop jobs of Mia, with one taking an image of her sitting on the floor watching television while superimposing an image of Khan giving a speech outdoors.

Mia has never commented on politics in Pakistan – although it's questionable why she would in the first place when she doesn't live there, work there or have any connection to the country.

Despite this, it is not the first time she has been used in Pakistani politics.

Last year, the country banned her TikTok account for “Immoral and unethical” content.

At the time, she tweeted: “Shoutout to Pakistan for banning my tiktok account from the country.

In 2019, Senator Rehman Malik once mistook her for an Indian actress while posting on Twitter about the Hijab ban.

A random account on Twitter had used three images of women in Hijabs to show that nobody wanted the ban – and one of those was Mia.

The senator quote tweeted the images with the caption: “May God bless her”.

Mia once sparked fury when she wore Hijabs in x-rated material on Pornhub.

The former adult star, who lives in the United States, has been more vocal about American politics in recent years.

She confirmed during the US election in 2020 that she voted for Joe Biden.

Mia said on Instagram: “This Republican voted for Biden, because even if it f****d my a** hard and dry in taxes, the incumbent president does not represent Republican ethics and ideals.

“Make your voice be heard for democracy

“This is our little secret, our civically responsible dirty little secret.”
