Two of America's oldest Death Row residents are set to be executed today after years of waiting in limbo following their horrific crimes following a gluttonous last meal of cheeseburgers.
Pensioners Carl Wayne Buntion, 78 and Oscar Smith, 72, are the oldest and second oldest condemned prisoners in the system respectively and have waited decades each for their sentences to be carried out.
Both men have elected to die by lethal injection and each execution will be carried out today (April 21).
Earlier this year, Buntion was finally given the date of his 30-year delayed execution for the brutal murder of a police officer in 1990.
Buntion, who had an extensive criminal record already, shot and killed Houston police officer James Irby, 37 in June of that year.
Travelling as a passenger, Buntion shot the officer after they were pulled over at a traffic stop.
According to Click2Houston, Buntion exited the car while the driver and Irby were talking and shot him once in the head and twice in the back before being apprehended.
He was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death the following year in Texas.
Speaking after the announcement, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said: “He shot a policeman in the head more than 30 years ago, and it is time that he be held accountable for his horrific crime.”
Buntion is set to be executed at 7pm ET today (00:00 GMT).

Meanwhile Oscar Smith is set to be executed in nearby Tennesee at roughly the same time for his horrific crimes.
In 1989, Smith stabbed and shot his estranged wife, Judith Smith, and her sons Jason and Chad Burnett, 13 and 16, at their Nashville home.
The convict has always maintained his innocence and begged the Tennessee Supreme Court to reopen his case after an unknown person’s DNA was found on one of the murder weapons.
However, the state ruled that the death row inmate had not provided any evidence he was innocent of the brutal murders, with a judge stating Smith’s guilt was extensive.
When Smith is put to death by lethal injection he will become the first inmate to die in Tennessee since the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the Tennessean, to prepare for his execution Smith has chosen to gorge on a frankly ridiculous last meal which includes a double bacon cheeseburger, a deep-dish apple pie and vanilla bean ice cream.
