Princess Diana eavesdropped on Charles as he told Camilla Ill always love you

Ahead of her wedding, Princess Diana eavesdropped on a conversation between Prince Charles and Camilla in which the future King of England told his now wife that he would always love her, according to reports.

The People's Princess opened up about overhearing the miserable phone call in Andrew Morton's book, Diana The True Story – In Her Own Words.

The book was a smash hit when it was first published in 1992, and has been recently republished with additional new material to mark the 25th anniversary of the Princess of Wales' death on August 26, 2022.

Today also marks a milestone in the history of Diana and Charles with August 28 in 1996 being the date their divorce was finalised.

The book details how the young Lady Diana Spencer listened into the nightmare conversation through a closed door while Charles chatted to Camilla on the phone while taking a bath.

In interviews which formed the book, the late princess went on the record to say: "I once heard him on the telephone in his bath on his hand-held set, saying: ‘Whatever happens, I will always love you.’

"I told him afterwards that I had listened at the door, and we had a filthy row."

This wasn't the first time Diana was aware of private and intimate phone calls between the Duke of Wales and his mistress ahead of their wedding.

Recalling the time she had been snapped sobbing as Charles left for a five week tour of the antipodes, Diana said: "It had nothing to do with him going. The most awful thing had happened before he went.

"I was in his study talking to him, when the telephone rang. It was Camilla, just before he was going [away] for five weeks.

"I thought: ‘Shall I be nice [and let him talk to her in private] or shall I just sit here?’

"So I thought I’d be nice, so I left them to it.

"It just broke my heart, that."
