RAF Typhoons were scrambled on Thursday evening and Friday morning to intercept several Russian aircraft flying close to NATO airspace. The tense encounters took place close after a Russian fighter jet failed to communicate with or notify the relevant Flight Information Regions (FIRs) about its movement. Defence Secretary Ben Wallace praised the British pilots involved in the scramble, saying the intercepts were a “stark reminder that the RAF is always ready to defend our skies and those of our allies”.
