Fears of Russia staging a ‘false flag’ operation – creating a fake pretext to invade Ukraine – are rocketing after accusations of shelling operations continued overnight. But Russian officials have been quick to mock western concerns. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said: “The exercises are over; you can calm down. The units are returning to their places of permanent deployment, as planned.” Mr Grushko described the alleged “build-up of Russian forces in Belarus” as “mythical,” adding that “NATO’s ‘eastern flank’ is nothing to worry about.” Despite Russia’s claims, NATO leaders have said there is evidence that up to 7,000 more troops have amassed in the region over the past two days.
