Officers in Washington urged people around the Senate Office to stay away following reports of an "active shooter".

US Capitol Police posted to X (formerly Twitter) to issue the warning today (Wednesday, August 2) but following an investigation were unable to locate a gunman.

Politico correspondent Nicholas Wu said: "DC's Metropolitan Police Department spox Hugh Carew tells me the evacuation of Russell Senate Office Building came after a call for an active shooter that 'appears to be a bad call'.

"'No injuries and no shooter were located.'"

Police attended the scene after receiving a "concerning" 911 call earlier today, prompting cops to descend upon the Capitol.

"Please stay away from the area as we are still investigating," the department said. "We will continue to communicate with the public here."

In a separate post they added: "If you are inside the Senate Buildings, everyone inside should be sheltering in place as the report was for a possible active shooter."

The officers added they hadn't confirmed reports of gunshots but warned members of the public to be vigilant.

"If you are in the area, follow the directions of our officers," they continued.

Meanwhile photos and videos posted to social media showed a heavy police presence at the Senate Office following the reports.

One clip showed people believed to be staff members being led out of Russell Senate Office Building with their hands up.

NBC correspondent Julie Tsirkin said underground entrances to the building had been blocked off and a first responders unit had been deployed to the Capitol's plaza.

So far no injuries have been reported and a shooter has not yet been found in the building, Washington DC's Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Hugh Carew told reporters.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the incident may have also been "mental health" related.
