A Tory MP has confirmed he was arrested in connection with rape allegations.
Earlier today it was announced a Conservative Member of Parliament had been released on conditional bail after being arrested on suspicion of rape and possession of drugs. MP for Reigate Crispin Blunt has since taken to X (formerly Twitter) to announce it was him who was questioned by police.
“It has been reported that an MP was arrested yesterday in connection with an allegation of rape. I am confirming that MP was me," Mr Blunt wrote. "The fact of the arrest requires a formal notification of the Speaker and then my Chief Whip."
Surrey Police detained an MP in Horley on Wednesday morning, before releasing them on conditional bail, the force said. A police spokesman said: "We can confirm a man was arrested yesterday morning (October 25) on suspicion of rape and possession of controlled substances.
"He has been released on conditional police bail pending further inquiries."
Mr Blunt has been suspended following the arrest. In his post he said he will "co-operate fully" with the investigation and is "confident" it will not lead to a charge. He said he has so far spoken with police twice, the first time three weeks ago.
"I do not intend to say anything further on this matter until the police have completed their inquiries," he added.
It is understood the 63-year-old has been asked to stay away from Parliament while police investigate the allegations.
The Tory Party has declined to comment on Mr Blunt’s arrest.
Mr Blunt was initially elected as MP for Reigate, Surrey, in 1997. He also served in the Ministry of Justice and oversaw prisons and probation between 2010 and 2012 before becoming Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, a post he held from June 2015 until July 2017.
