Two dead as car crashes off bridge and sinks to bottom of river on Christmas Day

    Two people have died after their car plunged off a bridge in Swansea and sank to the bottom of the River Tawe.

    The tragic incident happened in the early hours of Christmas morning (December 25) and resulted in the car plunging into the icy water on the scene at New Cut Road in Swansea.

    Horrifically, authorities have confirmed the vehicle was fully submerged in the water for a number of hours.

    The bodies of man and a woman were found, who are yet to be identified, South Wales Police have said.

    No other vehicle was involved at the scene, although police have confirmed investigations are ongoing.

    Detective Inspector Sharon Gill-Lewis said: “ South Wales Police was called around 3.05am this morning, Christmas Day, following reports that a car had gone into the River Tawe at New Cut Road, Swansea.

    “Emergency services attended and a car was found fully submerged in the river. The bodies of a woman and man were located in the river nearby. Their next of kin are being informed and enquiries are continuing to ascertain the full circumstances behind the incident.

    “The incident is ongoing at the scene and no further detail is available at this time.”
